This is a great idea, Katelyn.... I just sat down and looked carefully at what I need to focus on with my work, and it's quite clear to me what directions I want to pursue. It didn't occur to me to make a piece of art about it, though. This is brilliant! I need to get my sketchbook out and see what comes out. Thanks so much for the inspiration- I have an inkling of what I need to make as my mission statement, but I will have to see if this first thought is the right one... hmmmm Food for thought....

I can see where a visible mission statement could be useful for a great many areas of life. I think I may well have to sit down and work on a couple. Great idea!

Eileen, I'm looking forward to hearing about it.

Cyndi, It really is worth doing. And it doesn't just help with art. If I'm stuck on writing something, staring blankly at the mission statement for a bit always seems to unstick me.

Katelyn, I just checked back and saw your wonderful past mission statements for your art. I am so psyched to do this! I'll let you know how it works out :-)

No, I don't. I do keep a journal, and of course I keep notebooks full of ideas and small sketches, but I've never thought to do a yearly mission statement this way. Hmmm...

I started doing this a few years ago when I was staring at a lovely Mary Engelbreit print I had hanging in front of my desk. The thought "Become yourself" popped into my head and I made a piece of my own art to hang there instead. Next was "Nurture the seed of your creativity and it will grow." It really makes a difference in my creativity because it reminds me that I can and should make art for the pleasure of just playing with new techniques and growing as an artist instead of worrying about samples for kids crafts or putting together mixed media art classes all the time.

No, but you've made me realize that I really should!

For this year, I'm thinking "Grow" or "One-Hour-a-Day-Art" based on my New Year's resolution to find at least one hour a day for my personal (as opposed to money-making) art.
