Inspired to Keep Dreaming

I stayed up til the wee hours working on this mixed media canvas that should have been finished a few months ago for several days straight to finally get it done. I consider it my mission statement for 2010. A reminder that, when you dream impossible dreams, they can come true. Let’s start dreaming, people!

On to the nitty gritty. I used acrylic paints and a dab of Radiant Pearls on the background. The shimmery stuff is a really cool children’s product from Faber-Castell called metallic gel sticks. I love these things and would advise swiping them from your five year old to give them a try. The flower is a piece of canvas I painted. The bird is tissue paper with Progresso unleaded colored pencils, gel sticks and a few other things layered on top. Oh, and his eye is another piece of canvas. I used several different ink pads on the tag and used a couple of different products to write the saying. My favorite is the Zig chalk pen, which I used to do the top layer on the black words.
Do you make yearly mission statements with your art?

No, but you’ve made me realize that I really should!
For this year, I’m thinking “Grow” or “One-Hour-a-Day-Art” based on my New Year’s resolution to find at least one hour a day for my personal (as opposed to money-making) art.

I started doing this a few years ago when I was staring at a lovely Mary Engelbreit print I had hanging in front of my desk. The thought “Become yourself” popped into my head and I made a piece of my own art to hang there instead. Next was “Nurture the seed of your creativity and it will grow.” It really makes a difference in my creativity because it reminds me that I can and should make art for the pleasure of just playing with new techniques and growing as an artist instead of worrying about samples for kids crafts or putting together mixed media art classes all the time.

No, I don’t. I do keep a journal, and of course I keep notebooks full of ideas and small sketches, but I’ve never thought to do a yearly mission statement this way. Hmmm…

Katelyn, I just checked back and saw your wonderful past mission statements for your art. I am so psyched to do this! I’ll let you know how it works out

Eileen, I’m looking forward to hearing about it.
Cyndi, It really is worth doing. And it doesn’t just help with art. If I’m stuck on writing something, staring blankly at the mission statement for a bit always seems to unstick me.

I can see where a visible mission statement could be useful for a great many areas of life. I think I may well have to sit down and work on a couple. Great idea!

This is a great idea, Katelyn…. I just sat down and looked carefully at what I need to focus on with my work, and it’s quite clear to me what directions I want to pursue. It didn’t occur to me to make a piece of art about it, though. This is brilliant! I need to get my sketchbook out and see what comes out. Thanks so much for the inspiration- I have an inkling of what I need to make as my mission statement, but I will have to see if this first thought is the right one… hmmmm Food for thought….
